About the Mountainlands
Nature Reserve
There can be few places as dramatically sited, or surrounded
by more grandiose countryside than Mountainlands Nature Reserve. The
shear size of this 18 000 hectare (44, 480 acres) reserve in the
Makhonjwa mountains close to Barberton in Mpumalanga Province, is
compelling and one of the few unspoilt treasures in South Africa. In
a 360 degree view all is dominated with idyllic scenery, mountains,
clear air, wildlife and beautiful African sunsets.
Mountainlands Nature Reserve is situated three hours from
Johannesburg, two hours from Maputo, one hour from Swaziland and the
Kruger National Park, half and hour from Nelspruit and its
international airport and only, ten minutes outside the historic
town of Barberton. This is wild Africa at it’s most romantic – and
it’s most accessible.

Development of the reserve
Mountainlands Nature Reserve is a cooperative reserve which became a
reality through the vision of the founding members and the
completion of a game-fence around its perimeter during 2001. This
consolidated approximately 18 000 ha of State, community-owned and
privately held land into a single reserve. The model holds all the
elements of a true Community, Public, Private Sector Partnership and
is a pioneering concept for conservation in South Africa.

inaccessibility. While the late 1800’s mining boom has long since
faded, the area has of late reinvented itself as a nature based
tourism destination. There is now widespread recognition of the
destination’s very unique and world renowned geology and important
biodiversity. Read more ...
