Mountainlands Estate forms the south-western section of the Mountainlands Nature Reserve, with its main gate only five kilometres from the historical town of Barberton. Access to the private sites of the Estate is at a monitored gate directly from the R40 tarred road. The Estate of 1 400 hectares consists of several large indigenous forested valleys, a number of perennial mountain streams and an extensive plains area all set against the majestic backdrop of the Makhonjwa Mountains. Development of the reserve
Mountainlands Nature Reserve is a cooperative reserve which became a reality through the vision of the founding members and the completion of a game-fence around its perimeter during 2001. This consolidated approximately 18 000 ha of State, community-owned and privately held land into a single reserve.
