Keeping tabs on wildlife

What started out as a project to survey the occurrence of leopards on areas of Mountainlands, has over the years morphed into a broader species monitoring project. Four years ago, the Boyd family sponsored trail cameras that were set up on a section of the reserve. Every time the cameras are serviced, we look forward to seeing the regular, territorial animals such as bush buck and red duiker, but also ones that don’t usually come past such as serval and aardwolf.
The trail cameras are also useful to observe the nocturnal game and rare species, such as leopards and honey badgers. Over the years, the footage has provided good insight into the animals’ health and behaviour. Overall, it fosters an appreciation for the species diversity on Mountainlands.
The following are some of the recent daylight photos captured on one of the cameras.
